Ruto Orders Kenya Power to Install Countrywide Internet; “Tumetenga Mabilioni”
President William Ruto reconfirmed his pledge to make sure that each of Kenya’s wards would be served with access to the internet at all technology hubs.
During his speech saying that Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) had been put in charge of ensuring internet connectivity across the country. It is one of the key promises by Ruto during his 2022 presidential election campaign.
Expanding Digital Access
In a speech During his visit to Kwale on Saturday, July 27, President Ruto made known the government’s desire to distribute free internet connection kits to all technical colleges and wards alike through KPLC. This project is all about bringing back life into the colleges and hubs, setting up computers where perhaps those who were locked in universities can be empowered with the analytical tools needed to make a living online.
We are going to employ the youth of Kenya through the digital space. We have engaged Kenya Power to carry out the provision of the internet in all our technical training colleges and sub-locations, which will assist us to take advantage especially for youth enter employments throughout digital space,” said Ruto.
Campaign Promises Fulfilled
Ruto promised among others internet connectivity and free calls during his 2022 presidential campaign. He added that free calls would support enterprising Kenyan business people to carry out their daily businesses without the hustle of paying for internet and phone call. The internet drive will be rooted along the lines of a last-mile electricity connectivity program embarked upon by former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration.
In his address, Ruto revealed that KSh 38 billion has been set aside for the implementation of a program to put up internet spots in all the country’s market centers which number about 29,000. It will deliver internet via fiber cables laid on Kenya Power transmission lines and aims to reach 18.5 million individuals living in areas covered by the power grid
Establishing Digital Hubs
In early 2023, Ruto promised to establish digital hubs in all 1,450 wards across the republic. This scheme is in line with an initiative to harness the potential of digital super high way and create employment for the youth. Ruto made the announcement after a meeting with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) secretary-general, Doreen Bogdan-Martin,in Nairobi He said that this road would allow digital access in every corner of Kenya.
This bold initiative demonstrates more than ever the government’s determination to continue to improve our digital infrastructure and create some of the vast opportunities that are now available for Kenya’s young people in this, very much fast growing part of their economy.
