Eliud Kipchoge remains one of the most famous athletes Kenya has produced.
His achievements over more than two decades have taken him from world-class track running to Olympic marathon glory and record-breaking performances on the road.
In 2026, Kipchoge entered a different stage of his career. Rather than focusing only on major championship titles, he began taking his running message around the world through a marathon tour.
Then, on October 11, he added another victory to his remarkable career by winning the Melbourne Marathon in Australia.
Eliud Kipchoge Wins Melbourne Marathon
Kipchoge won the men’s race at the 2026 Nike Melbourne Marathon Festival in 2:09:10.
Australian runner Thomas Do Canto finished second in 2:10:35, giving Kipchoge a winning margin of more than a minute. World Athletics
The result was significant because it showed that the veteran Kenyan could still win major marathon races at the age of 41.
It also added another city to a career that has already taken him to some of the world’s biggest road races.
His 2026 World Tour Opens a New Chapter
Earlier in the year, Kipchoge launched a project designed to take him through marathons on seven continents.
The tour began at the Cape Town Marathon in May.
Kipchoge finished the race in 2:13:29, but the event was about more than his finishing position. It marked the beginning of what he described as a mission to connect people through running. World Athletics
The tour is also linked to the Eliud Kipchoge Foundation, which supports projects in education and environmental conservation.
For Kipchoge, that means his later career is becoming increasingly connected to the impact he can make away from competition.
From Track Champion to Marathon Icon
Long before he became famous for marathons, Kipchoge was already an elite track athlete.
He won a world title over 5,000 metres before eventually moving to road racing.
The marathon became the event that turned him into a global sporting name.
Kipchoge won two Olympic marathon titles and later set a world record of 2:01:09 in Berlin in 2022.
World Athletics still lists him as a two-time Olympic champion and former world champion. World Athletics
His achievements helped redefine expectations around how fast the marathon could be run.
The Historic Sub-Two-Hour Run
One of the defining moments of Kipchoge’s career came in Vienna in 2019.
He completed the marathon distance in 1:59:40 during the INEOS 1:59 Challenge.
The performance was not recognized as an official world record because the event used conditions that did not meet normal record requirements.
Even so, Kipchoge became the first person to complete the marathon distance in under two hours.
That performance became one of the most recognized moments in modern distance running.
A Kenyan Athlete Known Around the World
Kipchoge’s influence extends beyond his race results.
His calm personality and emphasis on discipline have helped him build a following far outside traditional athletics circles.
He has also become associated with the idea that consistent preparation matters more than short-term success.
For many young runners, his career provides an example of how long-term discipline can produce extraordinary results.
His international profile has also helped keep Kenyan distance running visible around the world.
Why Eliud Kipchoge Is Still Relevant in 2026
Kipchoge is no longer at the beginning of his competitive career, but 2026 has shown that his story is not finished.
Winning in Melbourne demonstrated that he can still compete successfully over the marathon distance.
At the same time, his world tour represents a shift from chasing records toward using running as a platform for global engagement.
That combination of sporting achievement and continued public influence earns him a place among Gen Z’s top 20 Kenyans of 2026.
What Comes Next
Kipchoge’s world marathon tour is expected to continue into more continents and cities.
Attention will now turn to his next race and how long he chooses to continue competing at an elite level.
Whatever comes next, his place in Kenyan athletics history is already secure.
For the GenzGram KE Top 20 Kenyans 2026 series, Eliud Kipchoge takes Rank #18.
