Champions League Round-Up: Real Madrid Thrash Leipzig as Como Humiliate Manchester United

Wednesday night delivered goals, late drama and unexpected results in the UEFA Champions League, with Real Madrid and Como recording emphatic victories while Arsenal fought back to earn a valuable draw against Bayern Munich.

The third matchday of the 2026/27 league phase produced nine matches across Europe on October 21, with Galatasaray also impressing in a 4-2 victory over Lille and LASK pulling off a surprise 3-2 win against Sporting CP in Lisbon.

For Manchester United, however, the evening turned into another nightmare as they suffered a heavy defeat away from home.

Real Madrid cruise past RB Leipzig

Real Madrid produced one of the night’s most convincing performances, defeating RB Leipzig 4-1 at the Santiago Bernabéu.

Bernardo Silva opened the scoring for the Spanish giants before Arda Güler extended their advantage. Kylian Mbappé also found the net, while Yan Diomande completed the scoring for Madrid with an impressive finish.

Leipzig struggled to contain Madrid’s attacking quality, particularly as the match progressed. The hosts created dangerous opportunities through their movement and combinations in the final third, while goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois made important saves to prevent Leipzig from getting back into the contest.

The victory maintained Madrid’s perfect start to their Champions League campaign, giving the Spanish side three wins from three matches.

For Leipzig, the result was a reminder of the challenge facing teams attempting to compete with Europe’s most experienced sides in the competition.

Como embarrass Manchester United in 4-1 demolition

One of the biggest surprises of the night came in Italy, where Como defeated Manchester United 4-1.

Nico Paz set the tone by scoring in the second minute, catching United’s defence off guard with an excellent finish. The early goal gave Como confidence and forced the visitors to chase the game.

Como continued to exploit defensive weaknesses after the break. Anastasios Douvikas increased their advantage in the 49th minute after being set up by Paz, who later scored his second goal of the evening in the 57th minute.

Defender Jacobo Ramón added a fourth in the 76th minute, underlining Como’s superiority during a disappointing night for the English club.

Joshua Zirkzee scored a late consolation for Manchester United in stoppage time, but the goal did little to change the outcome.

The defeat intensified scrutiny of United’s performances and their defensive organisation. Their inability to recover after conceding early proved costly, while Como took advantage of the space and uncertainty in the visitors’ back line.

Paz was the standout performer, contributing two goals and an assist in an outstanding individual display.

Declan Rice rescues Arsenal against Bayern Munich

Arsenal secured a hard-fought 2-2 draw against Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena after Declan Rice scored a late equaliser.

The English side took the lead through Eberechi Eze, who finished after receiving a pass from Martin Ødegaard. However, Bayern responded through Alphonso Davies, who levelled the score after being set up by Harry Kane.

Kane then put Bayern ahead from the penalty spot after a handball by Jurrien Timber, leaving Arsenal facing the prospect of defeat.

Rice had other ideas.

The midfielder struck in the 82nd minute after a move involving Noni Madueke and Viktor Gyökeres, rescuing a point for Arsenal and denying Bayern a home victory.

Arsenal’s night was also affected by an injury to Bukayo Saka, who was forced off early in the match.

The draw kept Arsenal unbeaten in the league phase and demonstrated their ability to respond under pressure against one of Europe’s leading clubs. Bayern, meanwhile, were left frustrated after surrendering their advantage late in the game.

Galatasaray overpower Lille

Galatasaray claimed an impressive 4-2 away victory against Lille in France.

The Turkish side showed attacking intent throughout the match and capitalised on opportunities to secure all three points.

The result was particularly important for Galatasaray as they continue their attempt to establish themselves among the teams capable of progressing deep into the competition.

For Lille, conceding four goals at home was a setback, especially after their supporters had hoped for a positive result against the visitors.

Galatasaray’s performance underlined the danger posed by teams capable of combining attacking intensity with effective finishing.

LASK stun Sporting CP in Lisbon

LASK recorded one of the night’s most unexpected results, defeating Sporting CP 3-2 away from home.

Sporting had the advantage of playing in front of their home supporters, but the Austrian visitors proved difficult to contain and took advantage of their opportunities.

The defeat was a disappointment for Sporting, who had hoped to use home advantage to strengthen their position in the league phase.

For LASK, the victory represented a significant result against a side with considerable European experience.

 Other Champions League results

Wednesday’s remaining fixtures also produced important results across the continent.

– Aston Villa 3-1 Viking FK: Villa secured a home victory to continue their European campaign positively.
– Club Brugge 3-0 Lens:  The Belgian side recorded a comfortable win, keeping Lens scoreless.
– Inter Milan 1-0 Shakhtar Donetsk:  Inter secured a narrow victory in a tightly contested match.
– Real Betis 1-0 Feyenoord: Betis claimed all three points with a disciplined performance.

Together, the results demonstrated the competitive nature of the league phase, where even established clubs can face difficult nights away from home.

What the results mean

The biggest talking points were Madrid’s attacking performance, Como’s stunning win over Manchester United and Arsenal’s late response against Bayern.

Madrid continued to show why they remain formidable opponents in European competition, while Como enjoyed a night that will be remembered by their supporters for years to come.

Manchester United, by contrast, must address their defensive problems and find a way to produce more consistent performances. Their heavy defeat raises serious questions about their ability to compete effectively as the league phase progresses.

Arsenal will take encouragement from earning a draw in Munich, particularly after falling behind in the second half. Rice’s equaliser could prove important as the race for qualification develops.

With more fixtures still to come, the league phase remains open, and teams will have further opportunities to improve their positions.

For supporters, Wednesday night was another reminder of why the Champions League remains one of football’s most compelling competitions: established giants, ambitious challengers and unexpected results can all share the same stage.
