Ecuadorian Catholic Priest Struck Dead by Falling Crucifix During Livestreamed Mass

A Catholic priest in Ecuador has died after a large wooden crucifix fell on him while he was celebrating Mass, in a tragic incident that was captured during a live broadcast and has since attracted widespread attention on social media.

The priest, identified as Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari, was conducting an evening service on Saturday, October 17, 2026, at Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro Church, also known as Our Lady of Perpetual Help, in Guayaquil, Ecuador.

According to reports by the Associated Press and other international news organizations, the heavy crucifix was mounted on the wall behind the altar when it suddenly became detached and fell forward, striking the priest on the head.

The incident happened while the Mass was being streamed online, allowing viewers to witness the unexpected accident as it unfolded.

 How the tragic incident happened

Footage from the service shows Father Sánchez standing at the altar as he led the religious ceremony. Without an apparent warning, the large wooden crucifix behind him came loose and fell onto him.

The priest did not appear to notice the falling object before it struck him. The impact caused him to disappear from view behind the altar and pulpit area.

Worshippers immediately reacted with alarm, with some calling for an ambulance and others rushing to assist him. The livestream continued briefly as people attempted to respond to the emergency before the broadcast ended.

The distressing nature of the footage prompted widespread reactions online, with viewers expressing shock and sadness over the circumstances surrounding the priest’s death.

However, the footage alone does not establish why the crucifix fell or whether any structural fault contributed to the accident.

Church confirms priest’s death

The Archdiocese of Guayaquil confirmed the death of Father Sánchez Molinari in a statement shared following the incident.

The church expressed its condolences to his family, friends and religious community while remembering his service as a priest.

Father Sánchez served at Perpetuo Socorro Church in Guayaquil and belonged to the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, a Catholic religious order commonly known as the Redemptorists.

The congregation has an international presence and is involved in missionary and pastoral work in different parts of the world.

His death has drawn attention to the congregation and the local Catholic community, with reports of the incident spreading beyond Ecuador as the livestream footage circulated online.

What authorities have said

As of the initial reports published on October 18, authorities had not publicly provided a detailed explanation for the accident.

It remained unclear what caused the crucifix to detach from the wall, whether the mounting system had failed or whether any other circumstances contributed to its fall.

There was also no confirmed public account in those reports detailing the full emergency response or any formal findings concerning the cause of death.

The incident should therefore be understood as a reported fatal accident, without drawing conclusions about negligence or assigning blame before an investigation or official explanation is available.

Tragedy witnessed during a religious service

The incident has struck a chord with many people because it occurred during a sacred ceremony attended by worshippers and watched by others online.

For Catholics, the crucifix is a central symbol of the Christian faith, representing the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Its sudden fall during Mass has consequently made the circumstances of the accident particularly distressing for many viewers.

Nevertheless, the available reporting points to a physical accident involving a heavy object mounted behind the altar. There is no verified evidence establishing a supernatural explanation for what happened.

The circulation of graphic footage has also raised questions about how such material should be shared online, particularly when it shows a person’s final moments. Viewers are encouraged to consider the dignity of the deceased, the grief of his loved ones and the impact such images may have on people who encounter them unexpectedly.

Father Sánchez Molinari’s death is a painful loss for his parish and religious community. As condolences continue, the precise circumstances that led to the crucifix falling remain an important unanswered question.
