Why WhatsApp Users Are Complaining About the Introduction of Usernames

WhatsApp users are raising concerns over the new feature called usernames and if the change will improve privacy or provide new channels for scammers and impersonators to exploit. Pasted text

The feature was unveiled by Meta on June 29, 2026, and allows an option to connect to other WhatsApp users without necessarily giving out one’s phone number.

The change, however, has sparked debates in users, cybersecurity analysts, and policymakers over how WhatsApp users would identify each other and protect themselves from fraudsters.

1. Fear of Scammers Behind Fake Usernames

The main concern with the proposed change is that impersonation will become rampant on the encrypted messaging platform.

Fraudsters, for example, can use a name similar to a famous personality, company, or organization to mislead others into thinking that they are interacting with the real person or entity and scam them.

Although WhatsApp has promised to enforce restrictions against prominent usernames, cybersecurity analysts fear that the lookalike restriction will not be sufficient, as scammers will move their tactics to mislead people further by adding special characters to the usernames.

An outlet, Tech Crunch, reported in July 2026 that there were concerns in India over the number of WhatsApp user handles that were similar to prominent personalities, businesspersons, and companies during the soft launch of the update.

The Indian government reportedly asked WhatsApp to stop the rollout of the feature in the country until policies to prevent impersonation, phishing activities, and fraud were instituted.

According to Reuters, Indian authorities feared that the change would facilitate anonymity, allowing fraudsters to contact targets without immediately giving out their phone numbers.

WhatsApp has responded by stating that it has implemented several safeguards to prevent abuse, including restrictions on prominent usernames and systems that stop the guessing of username keys.

In addition, the company has also limited multiple attempts on username allocation to reduce the speed at which spammers can guess and impersonate high-profile handles.

2. Users Are Worried About Losing a Simple Way of Identifying People

WhatsApp users have expressed concerns that a username will make it more difficult to instantly identify the person they are interacting with on the messaging platform.

The change, for example, would require users to be careful when communicating with people using unverified WhatsApp accounts.

Although WhatsApp has promised that a phone number will continue to be a necessary criterion in identifying contacts, the company is inviting all users to choose a display name.

In case of a dispute, however, users can always ask to confirm that a particular person is indeed the WhatsApp account owner.

This fear is further compounded by the fact that some cybercriminals might use a username to lure innocent users to provide essential information such as their verification codes, passwords, and so on.

WhatsApp has assured users that the change will not affect their phone numbers; existing users will be able to continue interacting using their phone numbers, and those who do not want to set a username can continue using their phone numbers.

According to the company, the choice to use a username or a phone number will depend on the user.

3. Privacy and Meta’s Larger Ecosystem

WhatsApp believes that the feature will increase the platform’s privacy since users can choose how and whom to communicate with without immediately giving out their phone numbers.

However, privacy advocates have criticized the company for introducing the change and integrating it with Meta’s larger social media ecosystem.

WhatsApp users who are also Facebook or Instagram users, for instance, may find it tempting to use their existing Instagram or Facebook username.

According to Meta’s blog, WhatsApp users can claim their Instagram or Facebook handle by verifying their email, phone number, or accounts using the accounts center.

The feature would be useful for brands, businesses, and public figures who want to maintain a strong digital presence while interacting with their audience on WhatsApp.

The change, however, can be seen as a security flaw by ordinary users who do not want their Instagram or Facebook activity to be connected to their WhatsApp activity.

In other words, WhatsApp users’ social media activity will now be easily on searchable platforms such as Google, potentially exposing their personal information to spammers.

It is important to note, however, that WhatsApp conversations will remain private and encrypted.

4. Will Strangers Be Able to Search for Any WhatsApp User?

One of the most searched questions regarding WhatsApp’s new feature is whether the messaging platform will become a social media network.

According to WhatsApp’s official Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) on the new feature, there will be no public directory of WhatsApp user handles.

Furthermore, WhatsApp does not allow searching or suggestions of WhatsApp users based on their usernames.

In addition, a new contact will have to know a specific WhatsApp handle to send a message.

WhatsApp users, however, can set a discoverability key, an optional feature, to protect their communications.

According to WhatsApp, the discoverability key is a cryptographic value that prevents strangers from contacting WhatsApp users using their usernames.

WhatsApp users, therefore, have to ensure that they only share a phone number with trustworthy contacts.

On the other hand, if a user feels that they are too exposed, they can set a discoverability key, meaning that any new contact will have to know the key and the specific username to initiate a conversation.

WhatsApp has implemented these measures to reduce spam, abuse, and unwanted messages.

Although WhatsApp has put in adequate measures to reduce impersonation, users should be wary of suspicious handles, for instance, those that have special characters inserted in the middle of valid handles.

5. The Fear of Spam and Unwanted Messages

The primary concern of many users who have raised their concerns on social media platforms is that the new system will allow strangers to spam them.

Although WhatsApp has promised that users will have to know the handle of a particular contact, users can share their public handles on online forums, making it easier for spammers to track and target them.

Although WhatsApp has implemented safeguards against spam and abuse, how effective the system will be remains a question.

The company has deployed anti-spam technologies to detect and stop abuse at scale.

WhatsApp users, on the other hand, can block and report suspicious contacts or users.

6. WhatsApp Says the Feature Is Optional and Includes Safety Measures

Although WhatsApp has acknowledged the concerns raised by the users and promised to put in place appropriate safeguards, the company stands by its decision to introduce the new system, claiming that it will empower users by allowing them to decide how they want to communicate.

WhatsApp asserts that users can invest time in choosing a unique username, avoid using a public handle to maintain their privacy, and set a discoverability key to ensure that only trusted contacts can contact them.

According to WhatsApp, the company has also restricted prominent usernames, meaning that public figures such as politicians, government agencies, and so on will have a dedicated handle.

WhatsApp users, therefore, should not be concerned about impersonation, as they can report impersonators, and the WhatsApp Moderation Team will permanently ban the impersonator.

WhatsApp has also stated that a username will not replace a user’s phone number as the primary way of contacting other WhatsApp users.

In other words, the phone number will still be necessary for a user to claim ownership of a particular handle.

To this end, WhatsApp users can decide for themselves whether to use the new system, use their phone numbers, or use a combination of the two.

So, Is WhatsApp’s Username a Good Idea?

WhatsApp’s new system presents both advantages and disadvantages.

On the one hand, the feature will empower users to protect their privacy by choosing how they want to be contacted.

The system will also allow businesses, brands, and public figures to reach out to customers without giving out their phone numbers.

The main concern, however, is the risk of impersonation, phishing, and spam, which can be prevented by putting in place appropriate safeguards.

It is also important for WhatsApp users to remember that a handle cannot be used to identify a contact; it is, therefore, important to confirm who a contact is before dealing with them financially or giving out personal information such as a verification code.

The biggest lesson is that although the WhatsApp handles provide more privacy, they can be used to scam ordinary users, especially those who are not familiar with the technology.

WhatsApp, therefore, has to balance the privacy of its users while protecting them against impersonators, spammers, and fraudsters.

Only time will tell whether WhatsApp’s new usernames will benefit ordinary users and make the social media network more secure.
