Pentagon Plans to Livestream Nidal Hasan’s Execution, but JD Vance Raises Doubts

The United States Department of Defense has announced plans to livestream the execution of Nidal Malik Hasan, the former Army psychiatrist convicted of killing 13 people during a 2009 shooting at Fort Hood, Texas.

The announcement has sparked a heated debate over capital punishment, public accountability, and whether an execution should be broadcast for the public to watch. According to the US Army, Hasan’s execution is scheduled for December 3, 2026, at Fort Hood, where the deadly shooting occurred. He is expected to be executed by firing squad, a method rarely used in the United States.

However, the proposed livestream has already encountered uncertainty. On Friday, October 9, Vice President JD Vance questioned whether the broadcast would actually take place, saying he was not sure the plan would proceed.

Pentagon Says the Execution Will Be Public

The announcement followed comments by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who said the public would be able to watch the execution. A Pentagon official subsequently confirmed that the execution would be livestreamed, adding that further details would be released later.

The plan would represent an extraordinary departure from modern American practice, where executions are generally conducted privately in the presence of authorised witnesses rather than broadcast to a mass audience.

Supporters of the proposal argue that making the execution public could demonstrate the consequences of violent crimes. Critics, however, question whether broadcasting a person’s death would serve justice or turn a solemn legal process into a public spectacle.

Why Nidal Hasan Was Sentenced to Death

Hasan was an Army psychiatrist when he opened fire at Fort Hood on November 5, 2009, killing 13 people and injuring more than 30 others.

A military jury convicted him in 2013 and sentenced him to death. The shooting became one of the most devastating attacks on a US military installation and prompted extensive scrutiny of security procedures and the handling of warning signs before the attack.

After years of legal proceedings, the US Army announced in October 2026 that his execution would take place on December 3. President Donald Trump approved the death sentence, according to the Army’s official announcement.

The planned firing squad execution would be the first of its kind by the US military since 1945.

JD Vance Questions Whether the Livestream Will Happen

The proposed broadcast has raised questions even within the US administration.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Vice President JD Vance said he was uncertain whether the livestream would happen. He also indicated that he would not watch it if the broadcast went ahead. His remarks came a day after the Pentagon confirmed the plan, highlighting uncertainty surrounding how the execution would be presented to the public.

It remains unclear whether the livestream will proceed as announced or whether further legal, administrative, or political developments will change the arrangements.

A Wider Debate Over Public Executions

The controversy has reopened a broader debate about the role of public visibility in the administration of capital punishment.

Some argue that transparency is important when the state carries out its most severe punishment. Others contend that broadcasting an execution risks normalising violence, undermining human dignity and causing further distress to victims’ families and survivors. The case also raises practical questions about whether major online platforms would permit such a broadcast under their rules governing graphic violence and depictions of death.

For now, December 3 remains the scheduled execution date, while the livestream plan faces growing scrutiny.

The central question is no longer simply whether Hasan will face the death penalty, but whether the United States will allow the public to watch the execution unfold in real time.
