Coastal football has a reason to celebrate after Mombasa United officially secured their return to Kenya’s top football division following a decisive ruling by the Football Kenya Federation (FKF).

On Friday, October 9, 2026, FKF’s Leagues and Competitions Committee awarded Mombasa United a 2–0 victory over Kariobangi Sharks after their promotion/relegation playoff second leg was abandoned amid chaotic scenes at Ulinzi Sports Complex in Nairobi.
The decision confirmed Mombasa United as the aggregate winners of the tie, earning them a place in the 2026/27 FKF Premier League.
From Playoff Drama to Promotion
Mombasa United had entered the decisive encounter with an advantage after defeating Kariobangi Sharks 2–1 in the first leg at Mbaraki Sports Club in Mombasa on October 1.
The return leg on October 6 was expected to determine which team would secure its place in the top flight. However, the contest ended prematurely after tensions escalated following a controversial penalty awarded to Mombasa United.
At the time of abandonment, Kariobangi Sharks were leading 2–1 on the day, leaving the aggregate score tied at 3–3. The penalty awarded to Mombasa United had not been taken when the match was stopped.
The incident triggered protests, a pitch invasion and violence that forced match officials to leave the field under security protection.
FKF Delivers Its Verdict
After reviewing the circumstances surrounding the abandonment, FKF ruled that Kariobangi Sharks were responsible for the match being stopped and awarded Mombasa United a 2–0 victory for the second leg.
The ruling settled the promotion battle in favour of the coastal side, ending uncertainty over the final place in the 2026/27 Premier League.
The decision represents a significant breakthrough for Mombasa United, who had been fighting to secure their place in the country’s top division amid a season marked by disputes over promotion and relegation regulations.
A Major Boost for Football in the Coast Region
Mombasa United’s return to the top flight is an important moment for football supporters in the Coast region, who will once again have a local club competing among Kenya’s leading teams.
Promotion offers the club an opportunity to attract greater attention, strengthen its squad, expand its commercial partnerships and compete against established sides in the national league. It also places additional responsibility on the club’s management to prepare adequately for the demands of top-flight football, where competition, travel and financial requirements are considerably greater.
For Kariobangi Sharks, meanwhile, the ruling represents a major setback after their fight to preserve their Premier League status ended in a controversial and premature conclusion.
What Next for Mombasa United?
With their promotion confirmed, attention will now shift to Mombasa United’s preparations for the 2026/27 campaign.
The club will need to ensure it is competitively prepared to face the country’s top sides and make the most of its return to the elite level.
For supporters in Mombasa and across the Coast, the message is clear: Mombasa United are back in the big league. The challenge now is to turn promotion into a sustained presence in Kenyan football’s top division.
