Spain Train Collision: Dozens Killed After Two High-Speed Trains Crash Near Toledo

A deadly collision involving two high-speed passenger trains in central Spain has left dozens of people dead and many others injured, triggering a major emergency response and the suspension of rail services connecting Madrid to the country’s southern Andalusia region.

The accident occurred on Wednesday morning, October 28, 2026, near Urda in the province of Toledo. It involved a Renfe AVE train and an Iryo high-speed train travelling on the Madrid–Seville corridor.

Spanish authorities reported at least 30 fatalities as rescue operations continued, with concerns that the death toll could rise further. Some later media reports carried higher figures, underscoring the rapidly developing nature of the emergency. The final number of people killed and injured has yet to be conclusively established.

What Happened?

Spain’s rail infrastructure manager, Adif, confirmed that traffic on the high-speed line between Madrid and Andalusia had been suspended following a rear-end collision involving two trains.

Initial reports indicated that a Renfe AVE train collided with an Iryo train near Urda. Two carriages of the Iryo train reportedly derailed and plunged down an embankment, complicating rescue efforts and leaving emergency workers to search the damaged carriages for passengers who needed assistance.

The trains were carrying more than 500 passengers combined. Reports cited by Spanish media put the total at approximately 544 people, including an infant.

Emergency services were dispatched to the scene, including firefighters, Civil Guard officers, medical personnel and Civil Protection teams. Medical helicopters and mobile intensive-care units were also deployed to assist the injured.

Death Toll and Rescue Operations

The number of casualties has changed as authorities have received information from the scene and rescue teams have continued their work.

Regional authorities initially confirmed at least 10 deaths before later reports raised the figure to at least 30. Some subsequent coverage reported a higher toll, while officials warned that the situation remained serious.

Rescue workers faced the difficult task of reaching passengers in damaged carriages and transporting injured people for treatment. Authorities were also working to establish the identities of those killed and provide information to affected families.

Until the emergency operation is completed and official figures are consolidated, casualty numbers should be treated as provisional.

What Caused the Collision?

The precise cause of the accident remains under investigation.

Early reporting suggested that the Renfe train may have struck the Iryo train from behind after the latter stopped on the tracks. Spanish media also reported preliminary information about a possible signalling-system problem and the handling of train movements after services in the area were interrupted.

These accounts have not established a final official cause. Investigators will need to examine train movements, signalling records, communications between railway control staff and drivers, and other technical evidence before reaching conclusions.

It would therefore be premature to attribute responsibility to a particular driver, railway operator or control-room employee.

 Rail Services Suspended

The collision forced the suspension of high-speed services between Madrid and Andalusia, disrupting travel for passengers heading towards cities including Córdoba and Seville.

Rail operators advised affected passengers to follow official service announcements while emergency teams worked at the scene. Renfe also announced arrangements allowing affected travellers to request changes or cancellations without charge, according to reports.

The suspension is intended to facilitate emergency operations and ensure that the affected railway section can be assessed before normal services resume. Authorities had not provided a confirmed timetable for the full restoration of services in the reports available at the time of publication.

Spain Faces Another Major Rail Disaster

The latest collision comes less than a year after a deadly high-speed rail accident near Adamuz in Córdoba province in January 2026, when two trains collided after a derailment. That disaster killed dozens of people and prompted scrutiny of railway safety and infrastructure.

The new crash is likely to intensify public attention on railway safety, signalling systems, emergency preparedness and the procedures used to manage trains when technical problems interrupt normal operations.

However, the two incidents should not automatically be assumed to have the same cause. Each accident requires an independent investigation based on its own evidence.

 Spanish Leaders Respond

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed shock over the collision and offered solidarity and support to the victims and their families. He cancelled scheduled engagements as the emergency unfolded.

Authorities in the Castilla-La Mancha region also mobilised emergency resources and coordinated assistance at the crash site. Officials have prioritised rescue work, medical care and support for those affected.

As the operation continues, authorities are expected to provide further information about the casualties, the condition of injured passengers and the circumstances surrounding the collision.

 What Happens Next?

Investigators will work to establish how the trains came to collide and whether technical failures, operational decisions or other factors contributed to the accident.

In the meantime, emergency teams must complete rescue and recovery operations, identify victims and ensure that injured passengers receive appropriate care.

For families awaiting news, the immediate priority remains obtaining reliable information from official authorities and railway operators.

The collision near Urda has become one of Spain’s major rail emergencies of 2026. With the casualty figures still developing and the cause not yet conclusively established, the focus remains on saving lives, supporting survivors and determining exactly what happened.
